Beth Powell Using TV to teach the Internet

I teach undergraduate students in communication and marketing, particularly in the area of digital application. That means teaching the Internet. It’s impossible for any communications or marketing student to fully appreciate the shift in these industries without understanding the history and the role of the internet in changes to consumer behaviour, marketing communications and markets and business. Teaching the Internet in a non-technical area is relatively new and resources have been hard to… Continue

Kelly Chambers Teaching Short Filmmaking in School

Calling Out! I am currently on placement at a great school on the Sunshine Coast Hinterland and I have taken on the opportunity to conduct a Short Filmmaking course. I thought this would be a great chance to network with other teachers that are doing similar things in the area. The class is only small around 18 and on Monday of each week they have time for excursions. This brings me to the point. Would any other teachers out there being willing for us to come and see them in action on a Monday?… Continue

Australian Copyright Council Copyright implications of using Learning Management Systems

Myself and my colleagues, Ian McDonald and Louise Buckingham, have recently returned from a week of running copyright seminars in Adelaide. We ran several sessions for educators (see www.copyright.org.au/training) which were lively, interactive sessions where we dealt with the latest copyright issues affecting educational institutions. It is always interesting for us to hear about new teaching methods and to explore the copyrigh… Continue

Cathy Henkel “The Burning Season” film – what it’s about

Every year, there is a burning season in Indonesia. Areas of rainforest the size of Denmark are cut down and set alight by farmers and corporations to develop palm oil plantations. As well as destroying the habitat of critically endangered orangutans, new scientific evidence shows that deforestation comprises 20% of global carbon emissions, contributing significantly to climate change.… Continue

Kris Wyld EAST WEST 101 - student exercises

Creating the character It might be interesting for students to take a newspaper item about a crime and create characters and a story from it. If the crime is a murder, then they could make a profile of the victim, which is something detectives do. Students could look at the age, sex, ethnicity of the victim and create a character. What did he/she do to end up as a murder victim? They could create the victim’s family and colleagues, the witnesses and finally, the guilty. What were his/her… Continue

Cathy Henkel “The Burning Season” film – its creation

As writer, director and co-producer of “The Burning Season”, I’d like to share some of the reasons behind the creation of this film. My interest in the forests of Indonesia and the plight of the orangutan began in late 2006 when I discovered that over 4,000 orangutans had been killed by deliberately lit fires in Borneo that year. My partner Jeff Canin was doing some work for GRASP (Great Ape Survival Project) and showed me sad and horrific pictures of orangutans who had been injured and… Continue

Kris Wyld EAST WEST 101 - the creative process (part 2)

In Season Two, Steve and I spent months and months trying to find a series narrative that would top the first season. We had talked with the detectives, and got a number of possible scenarios; the researcher, Mandy McCarthy had also given mountains of material. But we still didn’t have a drive that made us feel this would be a powerful drama. One day, six months in, we decided to call SBS and tell them that there wouldn’t be a series 2. Once we decided that, a minute later, ideas started… Continue
